MediaMarktSaturn Retail Group, Europe’s leading consumer electronics retailer with more than 1,000 megastores in 14 countries, operates in Italy under the MediaWorld brand. Founded in 1991 in Curno (BG) MediaWorld now has 117 stores and about 6,000 employees throughout Italy.
As of June 2019, Mediamarket s.p.a has its first LEED® certified store in Lipomo (CO), which has achieved LEED® v4 Gold certification level.
With a total area of about 2,000 square meters, the LEED®-certified store consists of a sales area of about 1,600 square meters located on the ground floor of the building and an employee support area on the first floor.
The LEED®-certified store is located in an area featured by a high urban density and near to a number of amenities; all features that contributed to a higher final certification score.
Currently, in addition to the Mediamarket store in Lipomo, there is only one other store in Italy (under other ownership) certified according to the LEED® ID+C Retail v4 level Gold rating; in any case, the Mediamarket store, with its 71 points, acquired the highest score in this rating.
1. Highly efficient HVAC systems
2. Outside air flow rates according to ASHRAE 62.1:2010 adjusted to actual occupancy
3. Equipment with reduced potable water flow rates
4. LED lluminaires with light sensors
5. Monitoring of energy consumption
6. More than 75% of waste generated during the construction phase recovered/recycled
7. Use of materials with low VOC emissions and VOC content
8. Implementation of an indoor air quality management plan during construction
9. Development of ergonomics strategies for workers
10. Use of renewable energy

Preliminary assessment of the overall sustainability of the project: selection of the best LEED® certification rating and evaluation of the resulting attainable certification level.
Project team management activities through:
– Guidance on selection of materials and equipment in accordance with LEED® requirements.
– Approval of project documentation in accordance with LEED® requirements.
– Management of the project on LEED®online
Construction team management activities through:
– LEED® approval of materials and equipment
– Management for the implementation of construction plans
– Project management on LEED® online portal
Commissioning is a prerequisite for LEED®, the main purpose of which is to ensure that buildings and facilities are designed, constructed, and delivered to clients according to clear and well-defined criteria. The benefits of the process, if implemented on time, are:
– increases in occupant productivity
– containment of construction costs
– shorter plant commissioning times
energy model activity allows for the comparison of two models of the same building, baseline and proposed, the former built according to Ashrae 90.1 Appendix G and the latter in accordance with the project. The result is a snapshot of the building’s consumption. The comparison between the two models allow to calculate a percentage savings in energy cost.
In order to ensure the optimal conditions of thermal-hygrometric comfort and indoor air quality, it is necessary to ensure conditions conforming to at least class B according to ISO 7730:2005 in terms of PMV (Expected Mean Rating) and PPD (Expected Percentage Dissatisfied).
A calculation report was prepared showing that the design of the building-plant system was done taking into account all the parameters affecting comfort. This allowed to achieve the PMV and PPD values required to achieve class B according to ISO 7730:2005.
